July fourth in Nome is home to all sorts of wonderful little traditions. One of which is the blanket toss. At the main Anvil City Square downtown, we watched several kids get WAY up there. We ate free ice cream graciously handed out by the Nome Volunteer Fire Department. The one thing that we noticeably missed this year was any serious fireworks. Sure, we went and got some little boomers, smoke bombs and sparklers, but no massive fireworks display. Reason: no darkness. It is still light almost ALL DAY LONG. The sun may have set, but you can still read a book, provided you are up between 2 and 4 am anyway.
