At eight o'clock in the morning and the sun has not yet risen here in Nome. Won't until 9:12. This will take some getting used to. Sunset is at 8:29 tonight.
Last night about 10:30, Becca from next door knocks and tells us to come outside if we really wanted to see the northern lights dance. We rushed on our coats, just Amy and me, and walked away about fifty feet from the lights of the house.
Wow.
Over Anvil Mountain, every few minutes, we would see this green light spike. The horizon would get covered a couple of times in this green sheen that seemed to flicker with life. It was almost as if someone were behind the mountain with huge spotlights at times. It was amazing.
Funny thing that Amy remarked about was how no one else from the apartment building was out there. Becca told the truth when she said that they had all grown up with it. I still remembered in Bremerton, Washington, remarking to Amy every time we saw a good shot of The Brothers Mountain, or even when Mount Rainier was visible. Even the huge 100-foot evergreens amazed me on a daily basis.
I hope to never become inured to these lights.
Morgan went to a birthday party last night at the pool. When she got home, she had a new buddy with her that offered her to have a little slumber party at her house. She knew Yupik and was able to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in the language. It was pretty sounding. I would love to learn more of that language.
