Overheard

"We don't fire the police if crime goes up."

--Greg Gores, a history teacher at Lodi High School in California, expressing his indignation at Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent proposal to tie teacher pay raises to assessments of their classroom performance.

If this were true, I would be paid minimum wage for the lack of work of some of my students. Some children truly leave themselves behind.

Or, give me very small classes, less than ten, and I will get the job done. I can't do it in classes of 30 though.
