Today was a wonderful day in the Pacific Northwest. The family and I headed down to Tacoma to go to the Point Defiance Zoo. They have made some incredible changes there to the grounds. It will be really nice this summer. We became members so we can go back anytime now for free. Family membership works out to the price of two paid visits so if we go at least three times in the next year it will be well worth it. With summer break coming up I'm sure we can find time during the week to go.
The best part of the day was watching my kids engage with the animals. Morgan is at a fun age to walk with, being almost eleven. And Madison, at just about two, was able to point at "aminals," say the names back, and even feed the goats at the petting zoo. "I do!" she chirps as she drops half the goat chow on the ground. Watching her face in amazement and wonder as we petted starfish was just awesome. Awesome being the word. I am still awed that this is my flesh and blood.
Then we came back and hung out as a family, what with Amy being off work and this being Spring Break. We even got a nap in. Morgan went to spend the night at a friend's house so after Madison fell asleep...oh-la-la.
When it comes down to it, these are the days you live for. No matter how fulfilling work is, or how stimulating a book is, or how cool a movie is, it is just that family time, in a world that you made, that makes all the difference in the quality of life. My family keeps me whole and makes me sane. I feel like I conquered the world today, and all I did was hang out with my wife and kids.
What a great day.
