One of the wonderful reasons that Hitchcock was such a good director was that he started in the silent era of films. He learned early on that the camera could do a lot without words. In the beginning, we realize that the killer has a fetish for "golden curls" on women and the movie says nothing. It is all in the flip of hair and the look of worry on the actress's face as she reads about the recent murders in the paper. It takes one hell of a director to move a story without a word.
The Lodger is scary. Is he Jack the Ripper? It sure as hell feels so while watching the movie. Intense suspense without a single word uttered. Amazing.
